PJ3 - Finals

Pong - Atari Inc - 1972

Asteroids - Atari Inc - 1979

Space Invaders - Taito - 1978

Pacman - Namco - 1980

Tetris - Alexey Pajitnov - 1984

Fruit Ninja - Halfbrick Studios - 2010

PJ3 - Shoot 4 - Favourites

Even though this game is newer that the others (2010) the style of game still matches the older games where the background is stationary and the fruit over across the screen. I chose this particular image because it has the right amount of game play going on. There is some subtle wording/scoring and a good mix of action e.g. the fruit splats and swiping marks left when you cut the fruit. I think this photo will show a clear comparison between old and new games but how they have stayed the same.

I like this image for the same reasons as the other ones I took because of the effects pacman and the ghosts make.  This image had a longer exposure so there are more trails and colours produced.

I worked on getting the patterned I wanted from the ball which was even and the right amount. I also wanted only still numbers that don't change so they are not distracting.

This photo came out perfect! I most likely will chose this over the background with the space environent. This is because the asteroids left a really beautiful trail behind the. The photo looks crystal clear and high quality. There is enough going on so it looks better with the plain black background

This one is similar to the last as it has the same qualities. The movement is blurred yet there is a still shots of the characters. I think the white spot in the center is a distraction so it would be better if it was softer.

I composed this image so it had little blocks and the right amount of falling block. I chose a slow setting so that the camera could pick up the colours and it turned out how i expect which was good. I think the background is to bright and doesn't appear very natural so i will think about changing it to a darker colour.

I really like the image because of the game. Dark castle is a classic that brings back memory's of my childhood however it didn't photograph as well as expected. There is always movement within the levels but the screen was to bright to it let to much light into the lense with a long exposure meaning the movement didn't show up. There is some subtle movement from the man with the whip and the black and white is effective however i don't think it will read well with the rest of the set.

Pong - I tried two versions of pong, one with a fast ball and one with a slow ball. This is the fast one and was far more effective because of the light trails it left.  The fast moving ball meant that the camera could not keep up with the speed of it resulting in the diamond patterns. I think the fact that the score has stayed the same during the game is good as it doesn't create to much movement which could distract the viewer.

Tetris - I like the basic movement in the photo and the colours created when different colours overlapped. Its a bit of a disappointment that the background is light and that the game board is small because it make the photo look badly framed. Some of the other images of this game had more movement but I chose this one because of its colours and the balance of blocks filling up the bottom and the clear space. I think I need to fine the correct adjustments on the camera settings so that the image is less exposed making the colours bolder.

Minesweeper - The only aspect of this image that i really like is the range on opacity with the numbers. It gives a clear idea of how the game changes but its seems to be to much of a blur. The dull gray is not visually appealing and the numbers are not bright enough, I definatly prefer the games with the darker backgrounds and bright moving objects as they create much more effective images.

Slots - The movement of the slots came out more effectively than a thought they would. I think the background has a bit to much going on however the colours didn't come out bright and clean. I like the image but don't think I will use this game for one of my finals.

Asteriods - I really like the way this game photographed. The simple asteroid outlines created the smoky like waves making the whole scene appears like a airy cluster of stars in the universe. I chose to include the 'Level 1' caption to make it more obvious it was a game as there isn't a lot of obvious objects of text to display this. The colours might look brighter if I lengthen the exposure however i don't want to many of the asteroids to overcome the photo.

This was my favorite game to shoot from the lot as it was the easiest one to get a really good image from. It is a perfect example of my concept of the set backgrounds and moving characters. This photo has the right exposure length resulting in the perfect balance of light trails left by the ghosts and pacman. I like the colours created when the trails overlap and that there are some still shots of the characters.

This was one of the harder games to shoot from the lot because I not only had to get a good photo but also play smartly and survive to get it!. The space invaders move back and forth creating a blur of colours so I had to strategicaly die to get a still shot of them. I chose this photo for three reasons, the amount of space invaders was better with this amount instead of the entire group,  they were the right distance away from the red shooting ship leaving nice trails from the shooting lasers and there was a good amount of explosions.

PJ3 - New Concept

After some advice from my tutors the approach I am trying to take with my concept doesn't make perfect sense and that all my photos could come out looking to similar. I was suggested to use different object instead of animals are give them life like characteristics using light, movement and different angles. I was to choose an object that could have some sort of meaning to me and photograph it using the different techniques within one scene, for example I could shoot my guitar that I have abandoned for a long time. I could give it sad emotion by shooting it from a high angle. I could move the strings which with a long exposure would show movement, lastly I would using lights to give it life or maybe even facial features!
After giving the idea a try I decided not to go along with it as I didn't have much interest in doing it and though I would not have enough time to really pull it off.  I have come up with an entirely new concept for my project:

NEW CONCEPT:

For my new concept I want to photography classic arcade games using a long exposure setting. I have looked into the styles of gaming that exists and the the years they were made. There is an obvious change from the classic simple arcade games to the new and realistic 3d games now days. I have chosen to shoot the old classic games because there is a good variety of them and as a set i think they could be very effective. The classic games contain the following aspects:
  • Flat 2D graphics
  • Simplified shapes for object and characters
  • Block colours that are bright and artificial
  • Set backgrounds which characters move within
  • High contrast between colours (lighting)
Taking these factors into consideration  I will shot the games to show off their style. The games made at the present are very realistic and any of the have the same style. The backgrounds move victoriously and although the characters stay in the same position they have some movement to. Capturing these sort of styles in a photograph will be far less effective that the older, simpler games as they are most likely to come out as a blur. Because the older games contain less movement, when a photo is taken there will be a clear area that will stay stationary. The long exposures will allow the characters and objects movements to be visible hopefully creating interesting images of various light streams and colours. I thought that if i add the games title, maker and year it was from it could make the final images stronger.

New game: Call of Duty -  2003-2011
Old Game: Pacman - 1980
I will try shooting the following games of my computer or ipad:
  • Pacman - Namco - 1980
  • Space Invaders - Taito - 1978
  • Asteroids - Atari Inc - 1979
  • Tetris - Alexey Pajitnov - 1984
  • Dark Castle - Silicon Beach Software - 1986
  • Snake - Gremlin - 1976
  • Minesweeper - Microsoft - 1990
  • Slots - Macintosh - 1983
  • Pong - Atari Inc - 1972
  • Fruit Ninja - Halfbrick Studios - 2010 (later game with old style)

PJ3 - Shoot 2 - Favourites

The background of this photo is not positioned correctly and seem quite messy. However i do like the colouring, the light whites and oranges give a real feel of life and the colour of animals have turn out realistic and clean. The light i used is white with a orange casing which gives off nice warm tones. Maybe a black background could be better as a setting so more colours will be visible

The angles of the shadows is my favorite  technique in this photo. I like how they go from small to big as it gives of an idea that the animals are be enlarged to be more  of a realistic size. The reason I shot these image inside the small box was to see what would happen with the shadows and the lights, they end up reflecting nicely of the walls. It is not good that you can see my hand and the light i am using in the photo.

To make the shadows appear as they did i flashed the light into the animals at a different angle each time. The reason for this was to create movement to relate to my concept. I think the background is effective along with the shadows around the animals. The one factor that ruins this photo is that you can see the edges of the box and is is very out of focus.

This photo is obviously similar to the previous one but i have added the combination of moving shadow and colour. The colours of the shadows have overlapped creating different opacity's which is effective. If the animals were more spaced out and centered in frame the image could have been a lot better.

I really like the colours that were created in this photo, they portray the idea of life and energy clearly. The way that the lights have over powered the real textures of the animals has given them an interesting mix of colours. This lighting in this photo is the more effective part as it has made the background look the best out of all the photos I took. The streams of white light could be softer however it does create a glow underneath the animals which is like an negative shadow. This backs up the idea of them being alive but give an obvious impression that they are not life size but are trying to appear that way.
